My Favorite Resources and Foods Since Starting a Gluten-Free Diet

After reading a lot about the symptoms alleviated by following a gluten-free diet, my wife convinced me to give it a try. After a couple of false starts (mostly because I hate to read labels) we've been following a gluten-free diet scrupulously.

In the beginning we tried a variety of gluten-free foods and recipes and it was difficult to find palatable products.

After much trial and error, we have come up with a list of our favorites, which we hope will save you from some of the dietary disappointments we endured in our search for gluten free AND tasty pastas, cookies, breads and more. This page has informative videos and links to the gluten-free resources, information, and products we found most helpful.

Neither of us, fortunately, has celiac disease, nonetheless I have personally found eating gluten-free to be quite beneficial. I feel better and have more motivation, and the creative, mental and physical energy to accomplish a lot more than I could do even six months ago. I have even given up my late afternoon nap (at least most days).

First things first: A Gluten Free Diet Can be Easy AND Delicious

When my wife first proposed trying a Gluten Free diet, I strongly resisted. I was overwhelmed and Very unhappy.

You see - I love to EAT - and I have been blessed with a metabolism that allows me to eat a lot and not gain weight. (Please don't hate me for that.) I snack constantly and seem to have the proverbial hollow leg at mealtime. So I was terrified of having to follow a gluten-free diet. How could I give up donuts, pretzels, beer, cookies, and bread?

What helped me most was finding out that I didn't have to give up most of those things and learning that there were healthier substitutes that I actually liked better.

So I am starting this page by introducing you to some of my favorite gluten free ready-made foods. I hope that way you will not have to go through the anxiety I did when faced with the prospect of going gluten-free.

Later on we will discuss symptoms, health benefits, cost savings, basic pantry staples, making your own food and other related topics.

But for now, I want you to drool over some of my favorite gluten free goodies. There is no reason to feel deprived like I did in the beginning.

Better than Bisquik's Gluten Free mix, Pamela's Ultimate Baking and Pancake Mix is appropriately named. It makes light and fluffy pancakes, tasty waffles, biscuits, breads and really good pizza dough. Great to keep on hand for impromtu entertaining as well as family meals.

My Favorite Gluten Free Food Shop

Although there are other products I have found that I do recommend, and am happy to do that, there is only one place (and brand) to shop that has never disappointed. If I didn't know Katz's products were gluten free I would have thought they came straight from a traditional bakery.

Would you believe this is Gluten Free and Delicious! Try it and see for yourself. Available at

Katz's GF Bakery.

From basic bread and rolls to flaky pastries and sinfully rich muffins and cupcakes, these are the equivalent to the best home-made GF recipes I've found -- and a lot more convenient. Plus there are coupons, specials, and free shipping offers that make shopping at Katz Gluten Free quite budget friendly. (Amazon.com also sells some Katz Products but you'll get the best deals buying directly from Katz's.)

These Are Some of My Favorite GF Goodies from Katz's

Pizza crusts, donuts, crusty hamburger rolls, assorted breads, cakes, muffins, pies, cupcakes and specialties like challah, hamentaschen, and rugelach. Plus mixes, pizza dough, cookies and more.

Katz’s pre-made pizza crusts are great to keep on hand for a quick tasty meal. They come in two sizes. Their GF bagels come closest to traditional bagels and are even better toasted and spread with cream cheese or butter.

Where else can you find specialty items like 3 flavors of gluten-free rugelach, cinnamon buns (not shown), hamentaschen, and a choice selection of GF challah and breads – not to mention Honey, blueberry, corn, and other varieties of muffins, the Cappuccino bundt cake shown above with the frosting included in a separate packet for a flawless presentation, cupcakes, and assorted pies in two sizes.

Sign their mailing list and you’ll get email notifications of their specials and sales. Or order their free sample pack consisting of 1 slice of whole grain bread, 1 slice of white bread, 1 slice of Challah, 1 Powdered Donut, 1 Chocolate Cupcake, 1 English Muffin, 1 Cookie, 1 Rugelah, and a slice of Marble Cake.

When Gluten Free Dieting isn't Enough

Because Many Other Products Contain Gluten

For those who are most sensitive to Gluten or who have Celiac disease, sometimes a gluten free diet alone is not sufficient to alleviate symptoms. Gluten is hidden in many health and beauty products we use daily, including many vitamins, make-up, toothpaste, soaps and shampoos, and many other products you wouldn't suspect would be exposing you to gluten.
